Our Story

Fountain Hills Middle School was founded in 1992, under the original name Fountain Hills Junior High School, and promotes students to Fountain Hills High School. Lenny Allsbrooks, the school's first principal, ushered in a new era for FHUSD. The junior/senior high school served grades 7-12. Through modifications and additions over time, the school separated into Fountain Hills Junior High School for grades 7-8 and Fountain Hills High School for grades 9-12. Prior to the opening of FHJHS, students who lived in Fountain Hills attended Fountain Hills Elementary School which was a K-8 school, and then Four Peaks Elementary School when the school changed its name in 1987. Fountain Hills Junior High School adopted the "Falcon" as its mascot, aligning with the new high school, and chose Royal Blue and Silver as the school colors. In 1998, the school changed its name to Fountain Hills Middle School when sixth graders began attending the school. In 2002, under the leadership of Mr. Tom Lawrence, a new Fountain Hills Middle School opened on McDowell Mountain Road (now McDowell Mountain Elementary School) due to overcrowding at the junior/senior high campus. The new campus featured state-of-the-art facilities including a varsity-level gymnasium, football stadium, and baseball and softball fields. The school featured natural light, open-concept team room spaces, and enhanced security.

The new school grew quickly and at its height of student enrollment, the campus was once again facing space issues. At the new FHMS, the school used a team teaching concept and each grade level divided students into two teams. Each team featured an English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Special Education teacher. The school saw tremendous academic results in the innovative team-teaching model.

In 2023, Fountain Hills Middle School moved back to its original location next to Fountain Hills High School and its campus became the new McDowell Mountain Elementary School. The move has provided more opportunities for students to take advanced classes and use the high school athletic facilities. FHMS has been incredibly successful in its 32-year history. The school has traditionally earned the top letter grade label from the Arizona Department of Education and has excelled athletically winning 46 league championships.
